I hate when I share a story with someone about a special moment or accomplishment and am met with unsolicited advice. Not only does that take away from the point of me sharing my happy news with you but it is an insult to my intelligence.
I am sure they mean well when trying to "guide me" but it feels more like I am being patronized. Like it isn't possible for me to comprehend what I should do next. The advice they give me is such common sense that I become easily irritated. It makes me want to respond with sarcastic and snarky remarks.
Me: "Look at this cool milestone I just reached!"
Person: "That's nice, but (insert unsolicited advice here)"
Me: "Oh, thank the heavens for your infinite knowledge! A lay person, like I, would have never been able to reach such a verdict on my own. I will be forever guided by your wisdom. Praise (insert name here)!"
It also makes me want to scream "NO SHIT!"
I wasn't born yesterday. Not only that, but I have been on my own for a very long time now...without parents or family. I have lost it all, overcome homelessness, and started my life over from scratch. I have learned many life lessons and have done quite an excellent job at getting to where I am today. All of which I have done without genius advice from others.
When I do feel like I could use some perspective I seek out those I respect, present my situation, and ask them for their input. After collecting multiple views on the matter I then take time to process it all and make the best decision for myself. I have learned how to be successful through the relationships I have built with those who are already successful, the relationships I have built with those I have seen go from "nowhere" to somewhere, and through taking every opportunity that comes my way. I have faced some of my greatest fears and challenges to become the person I am today. Those who know of my accomplishments and character never feel the need to change the focus of my achievements to what they think I should be doing. They celebrate with me and know I am more than capable of taking care of my business.
I know a part of this advice is given with good intentions. I have to appreciate that. I can't expect those people to know what is going on in my life in order for them to make a more informed remark about my situation. Only a handful of people know the entirety of what I am involved in and the path I am on. If everyone else knew, perhaps it would prevent verbal diarrhea.
And as you can probably tell if you have read this far, unsolicited advice, even when it comes from a good place, drives me up the freaking wall. Suffice it to say, this is a major pet peeve.

As humans why can't we listen to wise words better? Why do we believe we will get a different result than those who have tried before us? I suppose it is for those moments when the chance we take proves the others wrong. However, one thing has proven true thus far; some things are better left in the past.
Maybe it was my expectations that ruined it for me.... maybe I foolishly thought things could be the way they were. In this instance, I romanticized a situation which didn't turn out at all the way I fantasized it would. Don't get me wrong, I asked and I received. Not all those who put themselves out there get what they are asking for. I got what I asked for... but it didn't live up to what I'd hope it'd be. Which makes it my fault, perhaps. My fault for building it up in my mind before I had anything to go on.
It all got me thinking about how nothing will ever be the way it use to be. I look through photos I took with friends over the years and it fills me with happy reminiscent feelings. I look at where we all are now and we have all taken such different paths. Paths that only lead us away from one another. No matter how bad you want to hold onto them you lost them a long time ago. No one is who they were in those moments captured on camera. Most chances are things will never be the same. There are, of course, the instances where timelines meet once again and things are even better the second time around! Lucky bastards.
How does one accept the fact that what they long for present day cannot happen and they must settle for memories? Of course they can make new friends and create new memories... and in time look back on that as well. How do we make it last? Who actually has real friends anymore that they see frequently or speak to often outside of school, work, or the internet? Why does life have to be so busy that it gets in the way of real human interaction and building bonds? Is there anyone out there who would choose to make the time to cherish the relationships they have?
I miss the day where companionship mattered.

The flame flickers no more

As a little girl all I knew was performance. Then one day I became old enough to be self aware. This is when the anxiety and insecurities rushed in. I withdrew from not only performance but from people as well. I allowed myself to close up and not immediately show who I am because of fear of judgement. This unfortunately lasted many years. It hasn't been until my experiences at Bunker Hill Community College where I was able to find confidence in who I am and embrace my personality. This new found confidence and acceptance along with the recent inspiration from Tom Hiddleston's acting has repositioned me back on path towards performing once again.
I have always been in love with the idea of bringing a character to life. Being able to temporarily live a different existence and channel those emotions and experiences from within in order to project them to tell a story and affect an audience has always fulfilled me. I want to make people feel and I want to make people think.
Tom Hiddleston said it best during an interview with BBC Breakfast "As an actor what you'll do is with each character you're revealing different facets of yourself and I think all of us have the capacity to inhabit every extremity of the human condition." Amen to that.
I have been away from my art for so long that it will take time and practice before I start heading to "real" auditions again. Like with any form of art you must use it or you will slowly start to lose it. I need to rebuild what I have lost and continue to build on top of that.
Thank you Bunker Hill for the quality people you house and for the opportunities and services you offer to students. Thank you to all I have met at Bunker Hill and for inspiring me, supporting me, and changing my life. Thank you to Ryan, my boyfriend, who loves and supports me unconditionally no matter what I want to do with my life. And thank you Tom Hiddleston for catching my eye in the movie Thor which lead me to seek out other films you have been in. Watching how you can portray emotions vocally, physically, and internally have reignited the flame within to do the same thing.
